
There are more than 200 000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the EU, playing a crucial role in the European economy. A problem for these companies is the fact that most existing technologies were developed for large-volume manufacturing, resulting in costly and complex systems which typically cannot be used in a SME context. An objective of the SMErobot initiative is therefore to develop robot systems more suitable for small and medium enterprises.
Computer vision is already used in robot systems e.g. for locating specific objects or finding the right way through a working environment. To take this technology into SMEs there are some challenging computer vision problems to handle. For example,
